Former Haryana Chief Minister and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) supremo Om Prakash Chautala passed away on Friday, December 20, at the age of 89. He suffered a cardiac arrest in Gurugram, according to a party spokesperson.
Chautala, the son of former Deputy Prime Minister Chaudhary Devi Lal, served as Haryana’s chief minister four times. He last appeared in public on October 5 during the Haryana Assembly elections, casting his vote in Sirsa’s Chautala village.
Chautala had a long and eventful political career, beginning in 1970 when he was elected to the Haryana Legislative Assembly. Over the years, he held various key positions and led campaigns like “Nyaya Yudh,” following in his father’s footsteps.
He also faced controversies, including a four-year jail term in 2022 in a disproportionate assets case. Chautala was released from prison in 2020.
Chautala is survived by his two sons, Abhay Singh Chautala and Ajay Singh Chautala, and three daughters. His grandson, Dushyant Chautala, is currently Haryana’s deputy chief minister.
